Further to the announcement yesterday (July 19, 2023), that the final appeal to the Town’s Zoning By-law Amendment 2022-007 has been lifted, the Town would like to acknowledge and thank John Welton, Owner, Sunvale Homes for the substantial financial contribution to affordable housing initiatives associated with Sunvale Townhomes of Pretty River Development (17 Portland Street) of over $1 million. This contribution was a result of negotiations to resolve the final appeal.
Mr. Welton is a community-minded individual who understands the struggle to find housing that is affordable to middle income households and wanted to include in negotiations with the Town either a contribution of affordable units or dollars to the Affordable Housing Reserve Fund. Given time and process constraints, affordable units were not possible in this specific instance, but the committed funds can be used to help in the implementation of recommendations from the Town’s Affordable Housing Master Plan, expected later this year.
“We have great confidence in Council and Staff of the Town of Collingwood, and we know that many will benefit in the future from the actions and decisions being made today. We feel great about this, thank you from the Welton Family and the Team at Sunvale Homes!”
Developers are encouraged to work with the Town on including affordable housing within their proposals. There is a growing number of innovative options available, which will be enhanced by the outcomes of the Affordable Housing Master Plan.
Affordable Housing Master Plan Next Steps
The Town would like to thank Community members who took part in the recent Affordable Housing Master Plan public and stakeholder consultation sessions with N. Barry Lyon Consultants (NBLC). The insights you shared have added valuable local context as NBLC works to synthesize the information gathered from stakeholders and the community.
NBLC is developing a series of recommendations for public and stakeholder consideration. The draft recommendations will be released in early August, and we invite community members to join our second Affordable Housing Master Plan Public Consultation Session on Tuesday, August 15th at 5:00 p.m. During this in-person session, NBLC will share their key takeaways from their consultations, and you will have an opportunity to give your thoughts and feedback on the proposed recommendations.
Register today and come prepared to collaborate, share your thoughts and help us create actions that will make a lasting impact on housing affordability in Collingwood!
